Canon PIXMA TR8620 Printer Review [2023]

Canon is a well-known brand in the digital imaging space, and over the years, it has produced some of the most amazing printers packed with various features. Canon’s PIXMA series has been a crowd favorite for a long time. In this blog, we are going to discuss a specific model from the PIXMA series, which is the PIXMA TR8620. It’s an entry-level multifunction inkjet printer with home office features, yet it is home-friendly in size and use. It was launched as the successor to the PIXMA TR8520, and it does share some similarities with its predecessor, which we will come across in this blog. Overview This all-in-one printer is packed with home office-ready features like a 20-page automatic document feeder (ADF), a duplexer for two-sided printing, and two paper trays. The printer uses five ink cartridges, composed of two types of black ink: one is pigment-based for documents, while the other is dye-based for glossy photo prints. The other three inks are cyan, magenta, and yellow. Along with the duplexer, the printer also supports smart-home integration with Alexa and Google Assistant.

Design and Features

Its dimensions are 17.3”x13.8”x7.5”, and it weighs only 17.4 pounds, which is fairly typical for a home inkjet all-in-one. On its control panel, you will find a large 4.3-inch color touchscreen angled upward at 90 degrees. The only physical buttons you will find are the power button and a couple of status LEDs, as the entire control panel is contained within the display. The touchscreen is very responsive, and the menus are easy to navigate. The control panel allows you to configure and print, scan, copy, and fax. You can also monitor ink levels. It can also be used to configure changes, adjust security configurations, generate usage reports, and more from the web interface. A card slot is located at the bottom left of the front panel, so you can directly print from the memory card.

As for paper handling, both paper trays can hold up to 100 sheets of plain paper. The rear paper tray can also hold up to 20 sheets of photo paper. The printer auto-senses and automatically switches trays according to the size and type of paper and the printing job. The primary paper cassette is located at the bottom of the printer, beneath the output tray.

To use the automatic document feeder, you need to open the top lid. Opening the ADF for use increases the height of the printer by an inch. The automatic document feeder sends multi-page documents to the scanner without you feeding each page to the scanner by hand. Although the TR8620 has a duplexer for two-sided printing, it doesn’t have an automatic duplex scanning feature, so you will have to flip the document through the ADF twice to scan two-sided documents. The TR8620 can transmit fax at a speed of 33.6 kbps. In its internal memory, the TR8620 can store up to 99 fax numbers and 250 pages.

Print Speed

Its overall print speed can be considered fairly good, but its speed on plain paper was slightly faster. It produced five-page text documents in 32.6 seconds, whereas it took 1 minute and 52 seconds to print six-page documents containing mixed text and color graphics. Its printing speed on glossy paper was the most impressive; it took 2 minutes and 4 seconds to print a glossy letter-sized photo. So, you won’t hear any complaints regarding its printing speed.

Its automatic duplex printer produced two-sided text prints at a fairly fast speed of 3.1 ppm. After printing the front side, the printer will pause for 14 seconds, giving time for the ink to dry before proceeding. It will take a total of 3 minutes and 12 seconds to print 10-page documents on 5 sheets. And it produced two-sided color prints of PDF at a speed of 2.3 ppm. And while printing those color PDFs, it will pause for 14 seconds before proceeding to the second side of each page.

Print and Copy Quality.

The TR8620 uses a pigment black ink in addition to the standard CMYK. Because of this, it produces high-quality prints and prints text that is sufficiently dark. The pigment black color makes texts darker and black areas in photos look richer and deeper while also increasing the color gamut at the same time. The edges appear to be fairly sharp, although the letterforms could be better. The color graphics turned out to be good, although some mild banding can be seen in dark areas. Even the glossy photo prints looked sharp, with accurate, natural-looking colors and smooth transitions.

The copies fairly reproduced the details of the original documents. The text of the copies looked slightly uneven around the edges, but the graphics were nearly a perfect copy of the original. Copies of text documents that were fed through the ADF came out with fatter-looking letterforms, and the edges were not as sharp as well. The scan quality was excellent, as it managed to capture all the details and colors accurately from the original. Particularly the photograph scans.

Conclusion

The Canon PIXMA TR8620 offers some amazing office features, such as a document feeder, duplexer, and fax capability, to name a few, at a reasonable price. It can make copies quickly, and on plain paper, its printing speed is better than average. It can also produce quality prints, and scans are also captured with fine detail. However, it’s not the best choice for high-volume printing jobs, as ink costs are a little on the expensive side. So, if you are looking for a printer that can print snapshots, you can definitely go for the PIXMATR8620.
